Bull at the Gate by Serphire Bull at the Gate by Serphire

------------------------------------------

EDIT: This is in no way whatsoever a promotional piece for dog fighting. Being such a big animal lover, especially of dogs, and future veterinary nurse, the issue of dog fighting is very, very unsettling to me. To express my hatred for this so called "sport", which is sad that it's even considered that, I've created a story behind this piece and this character to express the trauma and suffering these poor animals go through just for human entertainment.
Please do not offend too easily to this, I have no intentions of doing so, but please remember this is merely a fictional story and character based on this issue. Stories can be based on anything, the good, and even the bad subjects of life; I chose this subject as an expression of my own thoughts and as an eye opener to viewers on this horrendous issue.

To provide you all with a little back story or explanation of this piece, this particular character was used as a watch dog for an illegal dog fighting facility. He was the only mastiff on site and the largest of all the dogs on site. One of the trainers however had tried to get this boy to fight other dogs and see what he could make of him. This character is in no way naturally aggressive, being the true nature of a mastiff, however the influence of other dogs and the trainers had unfortunately made him more aggressive, he became very nervous and lashed out on even the humans on site. Because of this it was unfortunately decided that he get put down. With the help of yet another sensitive and nervous dog, a friend of his, a pit bull named Cooper, had helped this mastiff escape from being put down and ultamitely helping him on their escape together.
It's a very sad story focused on the horrors these dogs face and the friendship between these two characters, the mastiff and the pit bull. Both absolutely beautiful breeds with an unfortunate bad reputation, especially for the pit bull.

Anyway... Just a story I've come up with :o I thought I'd better explain more about this, this particular piece is a scene of of his escape, hence the broken chain link fence in the front.

//////////////
I know I still need to reply and comment on thigsss
but I've had this done for a while now and thought I should upload it ;-;
This is a new character which I still need to name;
I was thinking of naming  him Butcher or Walker or something idk
But he's an English mastiff; don't let the ears fool you, his ears were cropped or bitten off, considering it's rare to see English Mastiffs with cropped ears :0 Also his face/muzzle looks a little bull-mastiff-ish, sorry about that ;^;
Mastiffs are actually my favourite breed; I can't wait to get one of these one day!
But this is a little scene from a story I'm creating; I won't spoil anything just yet, I'm still planning things out ;D
BUT I hope you guys enjoy this!

Art/character (c) Serphire 2013/2014. (This was technically finished in 2013, but obv uploaded in 2014 lolol)
Which means this is my first submission for the year!
Happy New Year guys! I hope you all had an amazing new years! I know I can't remember mine too well....very messy night..much alcohol...many regrets

Enjoy guys!

Beautiful dog! Mastiffs have always been on my top dog list. Also, I would love to draw him as some sort of a "fanart" piece, is there any reference for him?

The worst part is, its our fault (as in humanity) that they  have such bad reputations.  It's not like the dogs wanted to be thrown into a cage and  tear another dog to bits or vice versa. Yes, it's sad what we humans have done to these poor animals. And even worse that we don't realize that it's our fault.

  I love this btw. That look in eyes... just.. amazing.

Damn gorgeous it's what this is.

Oh i think he looks like an english mastiff (bullmastiff's head are rounder and the muzzle flatter, but these guy's head is clearly square with a longish muzzle).

English mastiff's are an amazing breed. Yay you for giving us such a neat pic of one! :love:

Thank you so much for pointing that out, I was afraid the muzzle would put people off on thinking it was a bullmastiff. I definitely tried to get that squared head shape in, with the wider set eyes and broad muzzle. I'm glad I'm not the only one who knows these differences, english and bullmastiffs seem to be mistaken for each other a lot of times. Either way, they truly are a gorgeous breed, both the english and bullmastiffs, just big beautiful gentle giants <3

People just see a big/muscular dog and think bullmastiff mostly because him them and the english frequently sport a fawn coat with a black mask, but i think here the differences are pretty clear.

Yes they are! I've never actually met either one in real life but i'd love to! And you are very welcome! :aww:

Uh, in regards to the comment below me, I wouldn't really say a ban on ear-cropping makes a country "soft as shit"... it's 95% of the time a cosmetic procedure, and therefore pointless. It's not as bad as declawing, but it's certainly not pleasant for the dog by any means.

That aside, loving this character. I really like his big collar, slobber chains, and musculature - all classic mastino things that you rarely see portrayed. His facial structure especially is just gorgeous. MORE MASTIFFS ALL OF THE MASTIFFS

I agree with you there, I personally don't really like the idea of ear cropping or tail docking, unless it is necessary of course. I do love the look, but I could never actually do it since it's such an unnecessary procedure.

But thank you so much! You have no idea how much I love drawing these big beautiful dogs, MORE MASTIFFS COMING

I've read that sometimes the ear cropping and tail docking can lead to increased violent confrontation with other dogs, as they can't communicate properly with them their mood and intentions.  Tail and ears are important for communication.

That can be true sometimes I think, yeah. It may also just be my personal experience but the dogs I've known with docked tails have all been extremely sensitive about having them be touched. Unless the tail needs to be amputated for medical reasons (infections, malformities, bad breaks, etc) there's really no justification for just lopping them off.
